What camping precautions do you take when you go camping? Do you check the weather conditions for the area your going into and what weather source do you use? Also, do you take a radio, cell-phone, flares or any other emergency gear with you?
I usually check the weather channel before I depart for my destination. If I have concerns regarding flash-flooding I will call the rangers in the particular area that I'm going into. Once I arrive at my destination, I will look for a campsite on high ground and one that will give me good visibility in all directions. I camp alone and more concerned with two-legged critters than with the animal life found in the desert. I also shoulder a handgun.
When I locate a site I will usually get my tent up when I first arrive as we get desert winds in the afternoon. I anchor my tent down with 24" long steel rods. The desert is a graveyard for blown away tents that were not properly anchored.
I have a trac-fone that seems to work just about every place I've ever gone and carry 12 gauge flares for emergency purposes. You must be aware of the snake population found in the desert. There are a lot of rosy boa's surfing the ground for small rodents. They can be up to 40" long but are pretty shy and will stay out of your way. They can bite and draw blood, but are not poisonous. The sidewinders and Mojave rattler are extremely poisonous, but if you use common sense precautions you'll be fine. The thing you have to remember about rattlers is that there not going to back down or slither away. So you simply walk around them.
