Ok guys...its about time to add another rifle to the collection. Ive been wanting a .308 for a long time.
Ive got it narrowed down to several: 1)Savage FCP10, 2)Springfield MIA, 3)AR-10, 4)Remington VTR.
I know that these rifle are very different from each other. I want something that can shoot out to 200-250 yds accurately. About the only thing I'll hunt with it is deer, and weight isnt really an issue.
Would love to hear what you guys think.

Well, I guess it all comes down to how much you're willing to spend. With a little load tweaking I'm sure that all of the rifles mentioned will shoot accurately enough at those distances to take a deer cleanly. I've got a friend who has an AR-10 that will shot 1/2" groups all day (he paid for it too...). My boss right now is a Vietnam vet, and he speaks rather fondly of his M-14 service rifle. So, if you're looking for a military-based weapon it comes down to this: how nostalgic are you? Savage is probably the most consistently accurate firearm right out of the box, and I've never had a problem getting a Remington bolt gun to shoot either. If it was me, I'd probably have a tough time deciding between the semi-autos. I've got my share of bolts, and an AR-10 or M1A would look nice in the deer woods. Bottom line, I'd probably get the AR. But it would be a tough choice. gd

Right now the 2 semi's have 2 strikes against them...cost, and availabilty. I think that either one of them is going to be $1500-easy. On the other side of that, I could probably get either one of the boltguns set up for around $1000.

The Remington is very sweet! Just my opinion.

Hardcase-
Have you ever held or shot the VTR? I really like the way it looks, Im just not sure about the triangular barrell, and the muzzle break thats machined-in. I just dont want to buy a bunch of gimmicks.

Schrader,
The M700-VTR looks a bit odd, but the thought process behind the triangular barrel is sound - it's designed like flutes, to keep weight down on larger OD barrels, while providing the same characteristics as a bull barrel. There are actually 2 guns in Remington's lineup that carry the VTR label - the 700, and the R-15 VTR (unless you look under the tactical line, the only VTR to show up is the R-15. I suppose that it is a good gun, but for the money, if you're seriously considering the bolt guns, get the savage. JMHO

UPDATE:
I called our wholesaler today and asked about the savage tactical model in .308. Out of stock. Every tactical model.
Next on the list was a Springfield M1A....also out of stock.
Next on the list was a Springfield 1911 .45. He told me they didnt have 1 Springfield 1911 .45 in stock...in any model.
Next on the list was an AR-10....you guessed it-out of stock...no AR's of any make at all.
I guess its off to the gun shop.

Schrader,
Good luck finding what you're looking for. Since Barak Hussein Osama got elected, most places are sold out of all AR type guns. And it sounds like pretty much everything else. So much for reasonable prices...

UPDATE: I decided to go with a bolt action: a Remington 700 VLS with a 16x42 Super Sniper scope on it. The guy that has it right now says it does 1/2" groups @ 100yds without trying. It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I get it, but when I do I'll post some pics... ;D Schrader

Schrader, One of my brothers has a 700 VLS 22-250. That thing very accurate, and death on groundhogs as far as I have any business shooting at them with a .22 CF. You won't regret it. The only thing you'll need to consider is the trigger. If it's fairly heavy, you'll want to have someone lighten it. OR, you could do it yourself, if its a still got the factory trigger. If you decide to go this route, PM me, and I'll shoot you a link with instructions. It's relatively easy - I did the trigger on my brother's rifle. No major issues. And I'm usually a slow learner... gd
