A friend of mine has instructed me to take his girlfriend gun shopping for his christmas present. He wants a lever action for brush hunting deer here in KY. It will be his only deer rifle for the time. He has instructed for it to be under 500$. He like the Marlins, and Brownings. He is open to others. The Brownings are a bit out of that price range. He also has no idea what cartrige he wants. I have herd several reports that the marlins are lightly built? He is a good friend and I want him to have the best they can aford. Any pointers guys?

Well, I'll give it a shot... ;D
First, I own a 336 lever action that is my 2nd favorite deer rifle behind my trusty bolt gun. I'm not sure what ranges he's expecting to shoot, but a 30-30 with the LeverEvolution bullets should handle 150-200 yards just fine (depending on how much practice he gets in before the hunt). If he's really wanting something bigger, a .35 Rem would be okay too.
Second, I've never experienced, or heard of anyone having structural problems with a Marlin, and I've been fortunate enough to fire quite a few. I haven't shot the new XLR, but I'm intrigued. Either way, I have no compunction about recommending a Marlin. He'll love the ergonomics, and they are wonderfully reliable in function.
If he's wanting to use this as his only hunting rifle, he'll need a scope, which eliminates the Winchester. Can't think of anything else offhand, when we've already eliminated Browning.

By getting a 30-30 I believe it would limit him only to deersized game,What ,If he decided to go somewhere for something a bit larger? Would he be looking for another rifle (not allways bad)? Possibly he should go with an 30-06 which would cover some of the bigger game. Guess its a moot point now since it was for a Christmas gift. These were just my thoughts

I like the 30.06, but a .35 sure is nice too.
