Today was our youth hunt. We woke up to pouring rain, but when you only have one day you can't let the weather stop you. Luckily, by the time we got to my friend's farm it had stopped. It was very cool and foggy but we heard a gobbler soon after it started to get light. We set up in an old blind at the edge of a small field and I called softly . The gobbler answered . I waited a while and called softly again, sounded like he was coming closer. I repeated this several times but he then quit gobbling. I put the call up and we waited. It wasn't long before I saw a hen coming in. She was only 30 yards away when I saw her through the fog. Then I saw the gobbler, about 50 yards out in the woods.
I whispered to my daughter to move slow and not spook the hen. We slowly got the gun up but the gobbler started strutting, and instead of following the hen, he disappeared behind the ridge in front of us.
The hen fed around the field for several minutes but the gobbler was nowhere in sight. My daughter asked me if he was going to come in, and I was starting to wonder myself. I didn't want to call again with the hen that close, so we just sat still and waited.
Seemed like forever, then I heard "Pfffft" . I slowly turned my head and he was 10 yards from us, to our left, in full strut. My daughter was to my right, so we froze until he finally moved out in front of us. I couldn't see him for a big locust tree, and my daughter said " Can I shoot him ? " I told her to shoot if she had a shot.
She shot and yelled , " I got him !!"
I ran out of the blind and there he was , she made an excellent shot ! He was 22 pounds, 9 1/2 inch beard, and 3/4 inch spurs.
The Lord truly blessed us this morning.
