Let's assume that my set-up is as tuned as it's going to get. My groups with Thuderhead 100s are not as tight as with field points. I was thinking of trying Spitfire mechanicals, but I've heard many say that they've lost deer because the mechs didn't open (how they know they didn't open, I don't know). I had great success in the past with a much slower bow and Muzzy 90 grainers.
Do mechanicals work? What has your experience been?

Bob,
I've shot a fair number of deer with spitfires, as have some of my brothers and friends. I've never heard of a spitfire not opening on a deer. Actually, we've never had any problems with them at all. And tissue damage is almost unbelievable. If anyone is looking at expandables, I'd have no compunction about recommending spitfires. JMHO

Bob, No problem! If you try them out, let me know what you think. I'm actually considering using them this year again (state mandated switch... ) If I go back to them, I'll try and post a few pics of the results. gd

Bob,
Just an update,
Got to see a few deer shot with grim reapers and Rage slip-cam heads as well. Talked with an elk guide who said a client got a pass-through shot on an elk at 70 yards with a mechanical head. I've heard people talk about the mechanical broadheads not opening, but given their design, it appear to be physically impossible for most mechanical head not to open. I've got some grim reapers (razortips) that I'm hoping to try out this year - bow season was a bust last year... My main hunting partner right now shot 2 whitetails last year with the grim reapers. 1 buck @ 32 yards on a quartering towards shot: pass-through, one lung/liver/etc. Complete pass-through, dead deer. 2nd buck was broadside @ 57 yards (not advisable, but this was very open country, and he consistently shoots out to 100 yards): again, a complete pass-through with a double lung shot. Whitetails aren't made of steel. LOL!
