Anyone use those 5 gallon auto feeders from Walmart?
How long will the corn last under normal feeding conditions?
Are they worth the cost or is it better to invest in the bigger units?
I like the idea of feeding just after sunrise and just before sunset.

My lil brother used one a few years back, and never had a deer come to it durring daylight. It was emptied every day and became quite costly for just feeding them at night. This was a gravity fed one, I'm not sure how one with a timer work but I would suspect it would be the same.

My thoughts on the matter. I have purchased several of the 5 gallon feeders. Marketed By American Hunter and sold at Gander Mountain. The $39.00 price tag makes them attractive. And they will do in a pinch. But time has shown me that they are not the most practical. The 40 pounds they hold only last about a week. When full they are not the easiest to hang. Most of the tops do not secure well, As such they easily become damaged by fowl weather and coons. speaking of which the small food container enables those pesky critters easy access to the disbursement mechanism, which they can easily damage, and access the feed. the big plus with these units is the fact that they are fairly inexpensive. If stolen one is not out a fortune. I have now gone to On Time feeders. the large feed container is made of durable poly propylene, With a lid that secures nicely and good latching device makes it nearly coon proof. the feed barrel is tapered at the bottom and the smooth material make it difficult for the varmints to access it disbursement mechanism. it's 200 pound capacity will feed 3 pounds twice a day for just over a month. the disbursement mechanism is extremely power friendly, and will run in excess of 6 months on a rechargeable 6 volt battery. or a optional solar charger. the feeder comes pre programmed to run 30 min. after sunrise, and 30 min after sunset. it is also capable of being custom programmed to meet user defined specifications. the bare bones cost of around $100.00 makes this unit a bargain when one considers time saved filling, and longevity of this quality feeder.
