What is farthest distance you will shoot at a Deer or other game (with archery gear)?
Myself I try to keep my shots to 20 yards or less, But, I use a pendulam sight that is good out to 35 yards. I do take these 35 yard shots in practice just to be sure that if something presented itself I would be confident that I could make the shot.

Bronc,
Good question! I've been fairly serious about archery practice after watching a few deer walk by out of my comfort zone. I shoot routinely, and try to keep up my ability out to 50 yards (not that I would try to take a deer at that range). Out of the last 7 deer I've taken during archery season, 6 of them have been at least 30 yards away, the farthest was 39 yards. My personal limit is 40 yards, but things have to be perfect for me to attempt that kind of shot.

I regularly practice from 10 to 60 yds. Now I won't shoot a deer past 30 yds. And unless it's a real bruiser, (meat tag)nothing past 20 yds. Practicing at long distances will greatly improve your close range accuracy.

I have a compound bow given to me and started shooting in my small back yard. My distance to my target is 54feet. How can I set my second and third pins to be able to hit my spot at 30-35 yards. How meany inches high must I set the two pins to be close at this 54 foot range?MJEdens

Thats a good question;
First welcome to the boards.
I don't have an answer to the question, but, I would suggest trying a archery range to sight in at those distances. 54 feet is 18 yards so I would think 1 inch high should be close to the 28 to 30 yard mark, depending on the speed and flight of the arrow. This is only a guess and it is something that you should test at the various distances to be positive of where impact would be..... we wouldn't want a animal wounded and not recovered roaming around. Good luck and again welcome.
