Bible Study Verse
1 Corinthians. 4:14-17
I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me. That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church. (ESV)
Thoughts
I’ll never forget the first time I sat in a tree stand on a cold November morning. I have taken countless hunting trips throughout my life. My Dad started taking me when I was a young child. Each time my Dad and I would go hunting, he would always teach me something new. Most of the time, it was a new skill that would help me be more successful and safe in my hunting pursuits. As a child, I was not prepared to hunt by myself. However, as I grew up and learned more and more, I eventually was able to hunt on my own. Recently, I was able to take my son hunting with me for the first time and introduce him to the hobby I enjoy so much. I expect to be able to teach him many of the same things my Dad taught me. I still have so much to learn. Fortunately, I am still able to hunt with my Dad and he’s still showing me the ropes!
My Dad has been a mentor to me in the field, but he has also been one of my many mentors in my walk with Christ. In this passage, Paul demonstrates the importance of Godly mentors. While we have the ultimate Guide in Christ Jesus, sometimes we need people to look up to who are examples of Christ here on earth. Even as we mature, we still need mentors; but we are also expected to be mentors to others. (JC)
Action Point
Pray for Godly mentors who you can imitate as Paul described in this passage. Find an accountability partner or partners to help keep you focused on your growth as a Christian. As you mature, be willing to take the children under your wing and mentor them in Christ.
Sportsmen’s Tip of the Day
Pass on the sportsmen’s heritage to the next generation. Don’t leave them sitting on the sidelines. Rather, make them active participants. Just think of the opportunities to mentor them both in things of the field and the things of eternity.
